The Stirrer's Brummie Blog …Wednesday 09-08-2006 There's a great song from the mid '70s by former Faces member Ronnie Lane called “The Poacher”. "Give me fish with eyes like jewels and mirrors on their body" runs the chorus. Honestly Ron, there's no need to resort to illegal measures to land yourself a whopper - just head down to Birmingham's fish market. I was there today, and if you haven't been for a while it's easy to forget the variety and quality on offer. Red snapper, golden dorade, grey mullet, yellow fin tuna - every colour of the undersea rainbow is represented there. Remarkable how the city furthest from the sea in this island nation manages to have one of the finest fish markets in the country. I don't know they manage it - but they do. Personally, I think there's something fishy (groan) about how poorly it's promoted both locally and nationally. Until that changes, take The Stirrer's advice (and no doubt Ronnie Laine's too if he were still with us) and dive into Brum's real sea life centre. |
