Exclusive WYNDLEY GETS £3.5 MILLION GO AHEAD 11-07-2007 The Stirrer understands that Wyndley Leisure centre - one of the Birmingham pools at the centre of a £90 million rebuilding row - is to get a refurb costing just £3.5 million. Wyndley, in Sutton Coldfield, has been closed for several months while councillors pondered its future after asbestos was discovered in the roof. One newspaper report recently claimed that a replacment might cost £30 million although this has since been dismissed by Cabinet member for Leisure Ray Hassall. As he hinted in an article posted earlier today on The Stirrer, Hassall hasfound thatit's quite possible to "mend and make do" for a much lower sum and will make an announcement tomorrow (to see the report click here). Wyndley was named (along with Harborne baths and the Moseley Road pool) as one of a triumvirate whose future was threatened by the huge cost of rebuilding it. That led South Yardley councillor and Yardley MP John Hemming to accuse some councils officials of having an agenda to mislead the public (see the article here). The Stirrer's reports raised such a kerfuffle, the issue was raised in the city's full council meeting yesterday. |
