HEINZ QUITS TOUCHWOOD OVER BEANS AMNESTY

11-10-2006

In an amazing climbdown, HP sauce makers Heinz have cancelled their controversial “Beans Amnesty” due to take place this Saturday at Solihull's Touchwood Shopping Centre.

Throughout yesterday, they insisted their marketing stunt would go ahead in the face of local hostility, triggered by their decision to close the historic HP factory in Aston.

The Stirrer - on this site and in the Birmingham Mail - had threatened to stage a “Heinz Amnesty” outside Touchwood in protest.

We were calling on shoppers to hand in any of the company's products, as part of a boycott.

We understand that shopping centre bosses got cold feet about the possibility of a demonstration and requested that the event be pulled.

Heinz obliged, but have apparently accused Touchwood of “insensitivity” towards shoppers who might have wanted to trade in other brands of beans.

Don't worry guys, round here it's simply not an issue anymore - we're not buying anything you make anyway.
