Channel 4's omnipresent gagmeister Jimmy Carr tops an intriguing selection of up and coming shows at Symphony Hall, while The Stirrer's favourite rock venue The Robin in Bilston is offering a soul show headlined by Viscount Oliver's Four Tops.

There's also an overdue Birmingham visit from the long lost Cuban musical maestros who featured in Ry Cooder's ground-breaking movie Buena Vista Social Club.

Not forgetting the great, rugged voice of Free, Paul Rodgers, last seen on stage in these parts filling Freddie Mercury's size 9's with Queen. Details below

Viscount Oliver's Four Tops/Jimmy James and the Vagabonds - The Robin, Saturday, September 16 - £17.50 advance

Paul Rodgers - Symphony Hall, Thursday 5 October - £25

Jimmy Carr Gag Reflex (2nd date) - Symphony Hall, Friday 24 November - £18.50

Randy Crawford/Joe Sample Trio - Symphony Hall, Saturday 2 December - £27.50 and £25
