BIRMINGHAM SPEEDWAY BOSS RACES AGAINST DEADLINE

14-09-2006

Plans to bring speedway back to Perry Barr have been put on hold again today by Birmingham Council - and now the man who wants to get those engines revving faces a race against time to compete next season.

Kidderminster-based promoter Tony Mole has already had one bid to bringthe Brummiesback turned down last year by the council and, despite objections to the noise from some local residents, was hopeful of a winning bid this time around.

He has the backing of local MP Khalid Mahmood, although those opposed to the speedway include those well known lovers of peace and tranquility - the students at UCE.

Councillors at today's planning committee deferred a decision, pending further investigations, leaving Mole with just two weeks to get it back on the agenda and approved.

The ultimate deadline to lodge an application with the speedway authorities to take part in the league next year is October 31, but the practicalities of putting a viable business plan together mean the effective deadline is a month earlier. That leaves Mole facing a sprint to the finish as dramatic as anything we're likely to see on the track if his plans go ahead.
