BRITAIN IN THE DOLE DRUMS 16-6-2006 Hold the front page - NOT! Britain has just announced it's highest unemployment figures for four years and so far as we can tell not one politician from any major party has made an issue of it...nor is it prominent headline news in any part of the media. For the record, the jobless total now stands at 1.6 million, a rise of just under 200,000 people in a year according to the latest official statistics. The number of manufacturing jobs is now just over 3 million, the lowest since records began in 1978. No wonder so many people, especially in deprived parts of the country, think that the main-stream parties simply don't care about their plight. It seems that only the fear of losing their own jobs at election time prompts any kind of action from our appointed officials. |
