PRINCE OF WAILS... 18-08-2006 The Stirrer comes over all grumpy old man about changes to a favourite Moseley boozer It always comes as something of a shock to discover that one of your favourite pubs is due for a revamp - and The Prince of Wales in Moseley is just the latest in a long line of boozers to be earmarked for an overhaul. Why? The Prince has always seemed to me to be pretty close to the ideal night out - decent beer, a real mix of clientele, and enough rooms to spread out with your mates, or enjoy the banter of the bar. Most of all it's about atmosphere…something only customers can create but owners can destroy. Maybe I'm worrying about nothing. The Prince has been bought out by the owners of La Plancha, an award winning tapas bar just down the road - when it comes to food they're obviously doing something right. And better this than being sold to one of Britain's numerous bland pub chains I suppose. But behind the declaration that “everything will remain the same”, there is also the promise (threat?) of a refurbishment later in the year. Hmmm. Not sure about that, given that refurbishments in pubs - I know this is a broad generalisation, but it's true - are usually for the worse. Then there's whispers of the Prince offering a wide range of food - which if true will dramatically alter the character of the place. Honestly - crisps, cheese cobs and the occasional pickled egg are just fine by us. This is a drinker's pub dammit. Now bugger off and leave us alone. |
