18-11-2006

Revised plans for “out of hours” medical services in South Birmingham have now been agreed with the city's health scrutiny committee - and they guarantee that patients will have access all night, every night to a medical practice in Selly Oak.

The health company Badger who secured the contract for out of hours GP care from 1st December originally planned to concentrate post-11pm services on their Steelhouse House Lane site in the city centre which is currently used by other Birmingham residents.

Following intervention fromthe Council's Health Scrutiny Committee it's now been agreed to open a surgery through the night close to the Accident and Emergency department at Selly Oak hospital.

This will replace theexisting Katie Road Health Centre whichwill remain open, butno longer offer it's all night service.

In addition, between 6.30pm and 11pm and at weekends, patients who need an out of hours consultation will be able to choose betweenthe Selly Oak surgery, Steelhouse Lane, Heartlands Hospital, or Solihull Hospital.
