| 13 SACKED AS AIRPORT GETS TOUGH ON SECURITY
19-06-2007
It might smack of shutting the departure gate after the 747 has taken to the skies, but 13 staff at Birmingham Airport have been sacked after a TV investigation revealed shocking lapses in security. Spot checks are also being being introduced to keep workers on their toes. A fortnight ago, the “Tonight With Trevor McDonald” programme highlighted serious failures with the airport's baggage handling system, run by a company called ICTS. In the worst example, one worker was allowing suitcases to pass through to the hold even though he had his back to the screen. Colleagues were spotted asleep on the job or doing crossword puzzles instead of looking for bombs and explosives. Now those involved have been dismissed, and ICTS has been relieved of its duties in that part of the airport – although they remain in charge of airfield security. A new team of independent safety experts is being hired to oversee the relationship between airlines and third party contractors and they’ll carry out unannounced security audits. The Airport also plans to introduce random drugs and alcohol testing for all airside staff. |
