CND's KOREA OPPORTUNITIES

20-06-2006

During the Cold War, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament was always at pains to stress that it wasn't simply a Soviet stooge.

Now's the chance to prove it.

With North Korea reported to be fuelling a long-range missile that could strike the West Coast of the USA, what price a Pyongyang branch of the CND?

And while they're at it, how about a march on the Iranian embassy in London?

This isn't just cheap point scoring. The organisation claims it's opposed to the acquisition of nukes by every nation in the world.

But just check out www.cnduk.org and all of its activities are focussed on US and UK weapons.

Meanhwhile North Korea develops its Taepodong II weapons in the face of the usual unspecified threats from the States, Japan and America.

Sanctions won't scare Pyongyang, but maybe a few placard-waving lefties would. Or maybe not.

Is it too far-fetched to suggest that it's only the nuclear weapons wielded by the West that gives CND the freedom to oppose their existence?

In any event a bit ofaspiritof even-handedness on the partof those planning to march on the Labour conference in September might persuade the rest of us thatit is an organisation that really is fighting for a nuclear-free world - not just knocking the democratic nations which allow them the precious right to protest.

Post your views on www.thestirrer.com message board and let us know if you fancy lobbying the Iranians and North Koreans in the cause of a nuclear free world.
