"BOOZE CAPITAL" HAS ONE MORE FOR THE ROAD
22-02-2007
It looks as though the suburb named on The Stirrer as “the cheap booze capital of South Birmingham” is about to get another off-licence - unless residents can find a way of blocking the latest application.
A couple of days ago Cotteridge resident Andy Stowe complained that a
fifth booze outlet had opened within the space of a five minute walk around his local shopping street (see the article here).
Andy admits that he likes a beer - or even two - but fears that with so much competition in such a small area, the pressure will be on to cut prices and turn a blind eye to under-age drinking in an area already plagued by vandalism.
Well now the situation is about to get worse; just ten minutes walk away, there's a new Tesco Express opening and, yes, they've applied for
licence too.
Local councillors are so aghast at the prospect they've organised a public meeting at the United Reform Church In Beaumont Road, this Sunday (25th February) at 3pm.
It's a free country, so why shouldn't people be able to buy alcohol from a range of outlets? Leave a comment on the messageboard.
