BAGGIES SNUB FANS' PARADE 23-05-2007 Wembley-bound West Bromwich Albion have snubbed supporters by refusing to take part in a victory parade if they win Monday’s play-off final on against Derby County. Sandwell Council offered the Baggies the traditional open-top bus tour followed by a civic reception, subject to making it to the Premiership. But the club has declined, claiming that international commitments would mean that four star players - Jason Koumas, Zoltan Gera, Robert Koren and top-scorer Diomansy Kamara - would all be absent. Councillor Darren Cooper who has been handling the negotiations on behalf of the local authority said he was “extremely disappointed” by the reaction. “I don’t see why it should be a problem if a few players aren’t there. The fans would understand that. To be honest, I just don’t think it’s a good enough excuse. “It would give the citizens of the borough and all Baggies fans the chance to celebrate. “Sadly, I think this is typical of the club’s public relations at the moment. They just don’t seem to care about their supporters.” Cooper’s comments come after Albion were accused of cashing-in on the demand for Wembley tickets by forcing fans to use a costly telephone hotline to order tickets for the big match. The club’s two most recent promotions, in 2002 and 2004 were both celebrated in style, with thousands of fans lining the route from the Hawthorns to Sandwell Council House in Oldbury to view the team bus. West Brom declined to comment on their decision, with club officials keen to keep their focus on Monday’s match. Sandwell Council are now offering the alternative of a pre-season reception if Albiongo up. |
