SWEET BAN HARD TO SWALLOW23-06-2007 Watch out for the Gobstopper Gestapo! The Stirrer can reveal that one of Birmingham’s most popular multiplex cinemas has launched a crackdown on moviegoers taking in their own sweets and drinks. Cineworld on Broad Street has recently put up notices warning customers that they could have their bags searched if staff suspect them of trying to smuggle food of any kind through the doors. The Stirrer reckons the real problem is the ludicrous prices charged even for basic snacks in these places - make ‘em cheaper, and we wouldn’t have to stock up beforehand. It also makes you wonder how far their frisking policy would go - I mean, can you imagine a security guard asking, “Is that a stick of rock down your trousers or are you just pleased to see me”? Ooh er. (For Cineworld’s response, check out The Stirrer’s latest weekly column in the Birmingham Mail here. There’s also salty comment on Salman Rushdie’s knighthood and praise for the Women’s Hospital) Is The Stirrer a skinflint for trying to take food and drink into a cinema? Or do the multiplexes charge too much for refreshments? Leave a comment on the Miscellaneous section of our Message Board. |
