BIG SCREEN BLOW FOR BEEB 24-08-2007 BBC Birmingham's hopes of moving their big screen from Chamberlain Square to Victoria Square have suffered a blow after the city's planning committee deferred their application. As The Stirrer revealed in June, the Beeb was bending over backwards to get the screen accepted in its new location, even to the extent of designing a casing that tries to blend in with nearby stonework (link here) That failed to win over the Civic Society and the Victorian Society, who both objected. A compromise of a four year temporary licence proposed by the Chair of Planning David Roy was defeated by seven votes to six. Now there will have to be further consultation - but it needs to be quick. The Screen's Chamberlain Square licence runs out at the end of September and won't be renewed now the Town Hall has been tarted up. Do we need a Big Screen in Victoria Square?
