THE TRUTH - IN BLACK AND WHITE

27-04-2007

BBC bosses will have been horrified by the furore surrounding Robert Beckford’s departure from Radio WM

His allegation that the station fails to meet the needs of African Caribbean listeners in this great multi-cultural city is bound to cut them to the quick.

“Racist? Not us” you can hear them cry. And up to a point that’s true, says The Stirrer in his latest Birmingham Mail column. In fact, the problem is industry wide.

In ten years of telly presenting, he’s never worked with a black camera operator, and during fifteen years on the radio has never had a non-white producer.

The Stirrer also calls Stephen Hartland of Birmingham Civic Society a “Second City Lord Snooty” for opposing the beach in Chamberlain Square; and warns that Brummies won’t back the Olympics if it means their city is a financial loser.
