THE STIRRER'S RATED AND SLATED

27-08-2006

Find out what's making the Stirrer's bell go ting-a-ling-a-ling this week - and discover what, in particular is getting his goat…

Rated:

  1. US basketball player Stephon Maybury is a hero for introducing a range of budget sportswear designed to blow a hole in the profits of Nike and Adidas. In a world of £100 plus trainers - often targeted a hard-up inner city kids - Marbury has launched a range of basketball boots that cost just $14.98 - under £8. Can we expect David Beckham to launch a similar budget range for soccer kids? Don't hold your breath.
  1. The Youngblood Brass Band, who wowed the Barfly in Birmingham this week, with an awesome mix of funk, soul, jazz and hip hop. Great party sounds, great attitude. Don't miss 'em next time
  1. The German Winefest in Victoria Square. OK, it's over on Monday and hasn't been blessed with the best weather, but on a sunny summer's day in Brum, there's no finer place to while away a lunchtime or have swift one after work than in this German mini-market, with its bratwurst and and sauerkraut. Sehr gut!

Slated:

  1. Darrell Hair, more vampire than umpire, trying to suck blood from his cricket paymasters after the Oval test row. You won't be seeing much of him during the hours of daylight from now on.
  1. TV watchdog Ofcom for taking a complaint about smoking in Tom and Jerry so seriously that the Boomerang kids' channel is now censoring the cartoons by taking out shots of the mouse rolling his own. You have to wonder what these regulators are on??? Here's the moral - smoking's bad, smacking each other over the head still fine though.
  1. Birmingham Council for refusing to divulge the full cost of replacing a window pane in the New Street information kiosk - or greenhouse, as it's known. The repair has taken months, and for some bizarre reason the glass has had to be sourced in Austria. It's our money they're spending - and a freedom of information request is on its way.
