BRITAIN'S WAR IN LEBANON

28-07-2006

So the fact that the United States is using Prestwick Airport to send weapons-laden military flights to Israel without British permission is officially no big deal.

Downing Street has dismissed it as an issue of “process” not “principle”.

Really?

I wonder whether it will be viewed like that in the Middle East - or indeed, by Muslims around the world.

Lebanon appears to be hosting the pre-season warm-up for what some commentators believe will be World War Three.

And there we are, lending our magic sponge to one side (while refusing it to the other) believing that it's all just a question of “process”.

Right.

It's the same kind of non-logic that insists the London bombings were unconnected with the war in Iraq.

The only difference is that this time Britain has been drawn into a conflictwithout even being asked its permission.

Never mind that parliament hasn't sanctioned our involvement - neither has Downing Street.

Yet whether we like it or not, we are now officially allied to the US-Israeli war effort.

That's not just a “process” but a real issue of principle, I would have thought.

And meanwile Tony Blair heads to Washington determined to prove he's not Bush's poodle.

Quite right too…labrador would be more appropriate…loyal, obedient, and never happier than when having his tummy tickled.

George will be getting out the Bonio's now…
