“TEN THOUSAND NEW JOBS AT LONGBRIDGE” PLAN

27-12-2007

Plans to create 10,000 new jobs on the former MG Rover site in Longbridge have been unveiled today. The aim is to bring hi-tech business to the area, and also build 1,400 new homes in eco-communities.

Under the ambitious 15 year action plan drawn up by three councils – Birmingham, Bromsgrove and Worcestershire – there will also be three new parks, and a major expansion of Longbridge Station to encourage commuters to make the last leg of their journey into Birmingham by public transport.

The area’s long motoring history won’t be forgotten either – a new museum called the Austin Heritage Centre will also be developed.

With Bournville College planning to relocate to the site, there will also be a skilled and educated workforce on the doorstep.

All in all, positive news for a part of south-west Birmingham which, despite its proximity to beautiful countryside, suffers some of the worst deprivation in the city.

It sends out a message of defiance, showing once again in the face of adversity, that the battling Brummie spirit will always come through.
