BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE SKIN DEEP

06-06-2007

Stung by the news that Birmingham's entry for Miss Great Britain actually came from Stoke, The Stirrer's resident poet Brendan Hawthorne is moved to verse.

They searched for contested beauty
A bikini clad summertime cutie
The taste committee for Miss G.B. 07

Other regions found their peach or their rose
Except Birmingham of course as everyone knows
It just couldn't supply a spokesman's idea of heaven

Many of us thought it a very poor joke
When they found what they wanted in Stoke
And it counted because her ex was from Brum

But us West Midlanders have moved on some
From the shallow fields of the skin deep dumb
To where cultural advances have now made their home

So maybe we've entered a new age and time
Where glamour and beauty have become more sublime
And we need something other than good looks alone

And next year we'll raise the bar, set the scene
For the best entrant they've ever known or seen
To take the crown from the girl from Aberdeen
