GORE BLIMEY!

09-07-2007

Millionaires riding in on private jets to tell us all how to live a greener lifestyle? The Stirrer's poet laureate Brendan Hawthorne watches Live Earth with a jaded eye.

The truth is inconveniently packaged

with no green thought for landfill publicity

A greatest hits no-brainer exits stage left

towards the waiting helicopter or limo

A grandiose event where hot-air studio chat

should have been harnessed for a new type of reactor

the so-called funny men riding over expert comment

letting the foul-mouthed have their say before the watershed

At least they got more complaints about their appalling

use of language and timing than the crisis facing this planet

It also had the stale air of an embarrassing visit to a flatulent uncle

Bio-gas to get the dad dancing mood going to the hot singles

while studio TV’s burned away with no audience eyes

No additional message for the carnival event

set on a pivotal point in existence and role

Zero-seven zero-seven zero-seven

The odd protest song refreshed the thought

that someone can still write about abstinence

whilst the West plays host and Asia builds its necessities

to the point of Armageddon. A suggestion

the merest hint that we might all be too late

as we flash photograph the darkness because

we have all forgotten what it’s like to have no light

We fumble for the mobile ‘phone to take pictures of ourselves

as the last ice cap melts and Live Earth meters

enough energy to power a small city

and then has the audacity to tell us to shoot-out the standby neon

Our creature comforts are near extinction now

and when that day is over on what will we play our CD’s then?

On what will we download our downloads?

We are more aware of the preservation of silicon valleys

than dying rainforests and eco-systems

because we can’t let go of our technology

Our noo noo nano comfort blankets take

global hesitancy towards precipice policy making

and the truth of it all came from Terrance’s autocue

the party revellers calling for their Madonna and not the Madonna

as the grand unfurling of the 20/20 backdrop vision of Mr Gore’s

unprecedented seven point pledge to build a new world rolled out

Unfortunately many missed the message

from Wembley’s greenhouse jukebox

because it was a warm sunny day

and the music was good
