Poet's Corner NEGATIVE ASSET 20-08-2007 Miserable bosses cause unhappy workers. It's a statement of the bleedin' obvious which has recently been backed up by research. Brendan Hawthorne doesn't need the academic study. He's been there. We are the work-crew section of the human race caught up in a rodent work-force marathon running the maze rolling the wheels to exhaustion and for what? To form the underpaid undervalued underclass of the work-ethic generations Mortgage generators overtaxed overburdened and over wrought Pinned down by certain sector management who jump at their own shadows in fear of losing a pension or a share option Their frail ego's fearful of underlings who have the cheek to seek promotions or obtain a place on the hierarchical supervisory British Bulldog tower ‘To go' incompetence is dished up on a silver platter with a lack of humanity on the side Face fit leaders who moan when things are wrong forget praise when things are right get bogged down with keeping distance protocols bathe in secrecy and need-to-know bullshit briefings Where's the trust? Where's the support? Where's the experience? Cheap-is-best service policy apparently unless you're a Consultant Hopefuls had better shut up or get out because there's a queue at the door Check-in your pen if you're leaving because British management by and large have forgotten a few things That when computers and target setting improvement on improvement profit on profit are your only friends no-one will thank you for coming no-one will put themselves out for you because you have become a one-time sentient baring a frozen smile And when it's time for you to leave the lights will have already been extinguished for you and your keys will be up on the rack freeing you up to sign-on alongside past employees and ex-friends (Copyright 2007 Brendan Hawthorne) Is British management uniquely bad?
