POET'S MOVE GETS STAMP OF APPROVAL

25-07-2007

Poetry Wednesbury - a posse of Black Country versifiers led by our very own Brendan Hawthorne - has a new home, and they'll be staging their first performance there this week.

The group is moving base from the town’s library to the Old Post Office buildings on Holyhead Road.

It will mean that, for the first time in their seven year history, performance nights will change on a permanent basis from the last Wednesday of each month to the last Thursday.

Brendan, who founded the organisation along with Geoff Stevens, said: “This is a great opportunity to improve the writing and performing platform that is Poetry Wednesbury.

“We set up the idea initially to get new writers started in performing their poetry and prose.

“Over the years we have introduced a music element and an extra performance opportunity through Purple Patch Presents at the Barlow Theatre in Langley.

“Our recent funding has enabled us to record our shows and look towards CD production as well as producing our own pamphlets and advertising leaflets.

“Networking with other local organisations is essential to us and now being based in such a creative and community-minded centre can only be a bonus to us.

“It’s great being a part of getting Wednesbury even more on the map as an artistic and cultural centre in its own right.”

Brendan and Geoff are both published by Bristol-based publisher Bluechrome and gained recent critical acclaim with their performances of the ‘All Night Café and Other Dives’which is produced in an eye-catching menu format.

Poetry Wednesbury is a free event and seeks audiences as well as writers and performers to come along.

Brendan says that “if you want an evening that is fun, relaxed and even thought provoking, you should give Poetry Wednesbury a try!”

Poetry Wednesbury will meet for the first time at its new location at the Old Post Office, Holyhead Road on Thursday 26th July at 7.30 - admission free! All are welcome!
