BRUM CLOSES SCARY SUBWAY 11-01-2008 Businesses in Birmingham’s Fletcher’s Walk have welcomed the closure of one of the city’s least loved underpasses. The Stirrer has discovered that work to fill in Paradise Subway, underneath the Conservatoire, will start later this month. The owner of the highly rated Zagora restaurant, who gave his name only as Abdul, told us the work was long overdue. “They spent half a million pounds doing up the Town Hall, but spent nothing on the walkway leading up to it. It looks really disgusting, and is really dirty. People are scared to use it. “You only had to look at the other side of Paradise Forum where the McDonalds is to see what can be done. In the run up to Christmas it was packed. “They need to do a proper job making the passage brighter but it is definitely a good idea to close the subway.” A shop worker at the role playing shop Waylands Forge said that he had been mugged in the subway last year and couldn’t wait to see the back of it. “I think it’s a good idea” he said. “The sooner the better.” Birmingham has a rolling programme of subway closures, though some – for example, at Lancaster Circus – can not be filled in without serious consequences for the traffic?
