BRUM COUNCILLOR GRUNDY QUITS

28-03-2008

Birmingham Councillor Catherine Grundy is a surprise early casualty of the local elections in May – she’s standing down from her Kingstanding seat.

Grundy says that it’s all because of her workload – but tongues are already wagging on The Stirrer Forum suggesting that she jumped before she was pushed.

The official version is revealed in a statement issued by her agent and regular Stirrer contributor Hugh McCallion in which she says: “I am finding it increasingly difficult to juggle a busy job, which takes me all over the country, and a heavy political workload.

“It has been a pleasure working for the people of Kingstanding and I would love to go on doing it, especially as we have so many projects up and running.

“Now that I am up for re-election it’s make your mind up time. I still hope to continue working in the area on a voluntary basis.”

Grundy was elected in Kingstanding in 2006 after the High Court ruled that votes for BNP’s Sharon Ebanks had been counted twice.

She previously served in Brandwood between 2002 and 2004 before losing her seat there.

An active and vocal councillor, she will certainly be missed – and was even touted at one stage as a possible successor to the current leader Sir Albert Bore.

McCallion said her decision to stand down is “a surprise and a disappointment”.
