CALL FOR BAN ON FACEBOOK FASCISTS

12-11-2008

In the wake of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, West Midlands Labour MEP Neena Gill has launched a blistering attack on the social networking site Facebook for hosting seven known fascist groups.

Groups with names such as “Let's burn them all” and “Turn Gypsies to Fuel” have cropped up on the website, declaring their open contempt for Europe’s minority populations. The BNP also has a presence.

Gill said: “Facebook is an enormously popular and influential site and for this revelation to come as Europe remembers the countless lives lost in the fight against fascism, is very upsetting.

“I call on Facebook to ban these groups from its site immediately and dismantle what is essentially fascist propaganda.”

She continued: “For me, there is a troubling irony here. Social networking sites such as Facebook are designed to facilitate communication across borders, and around the world, and yet the groups who were today exposed as exploiting this resource have precisely the opposite motivation.

“The BNP are about division and parochialism and should really consider trying a different website to stoke up support. Perhaps they should google ‘loony’ and see what comes up.”
