COUNCIL EQUALITY BOSS "UNFIT FOR OFFICE" CLAIM

18-11-2008

Birmingham councillor Salma Yaqoob has questioned whether the city’s Head of Equalities Mushuq Ally is fit to hold office after he suggested that 95% of Muslim women don’t have a clue about what is going on in society.

Ally made his comments at a Scrutiny meeting last week when he was defending expenditure on the Preventing Violent Extremism project – already a subject of controversy on The Stirrer and elsewhere (see link here ).

He also claimed that all young Muslims want to “go to pubs and clubs, take a spliff here and there and enjoy themselves.

Yaqoob is astonished that there hasn’t been more of an outcry about his remarks, which she argues would have been roundly condemned if they’d been made another (non-Muslim) senior officer.

She said: “It’s outrageous that the Head of Equalities and Diversity could make these comments. It’s not acceptable.

“Nobody else could get away with these crass generalisations.

“On this basis, I would question his fitness to hold office.”
