UNIONS:  SINGLE STATUS DEAL "NEVER AGREED"

18-04-2008

Union leaders representing Birmingham Council staff have denied claims that they ever agreed to management's revised pay offer - contradicting claims made Alan Rudge, the city's Single Status boss.

Rudge said recently that both sides had shaken on the deal (see link here) but in a briefing note sent to members this week, Unison insist they had merely agreed to put the proposals out for consultation.

They also denied that a new ballot was ever on the agenda, saying:  "Management at no time raised the issue of us carrying out a full ballot of the membership.

"We had made it clear from the start of the talks that a ballot would only take place if the offer was acceptable to the union side.

"We said that the paperwork would have to go to the National union committees for approval as do all final single status offers.  They are now saying they want us to ballot because they didn't like the result of the vote at the meetings.

"They are also hoping that it will cause confusion and delay any strikes taking place before the local elections."
