Dates have been confirmed for Birmingham’s most consistently ambitious left-field music festival Supersonic this summer. One of the acts already confirmed are hometown hypno grinders Einstellung, who also play a one-off show next month (March 7) at the Rainbow in Digbeth.

Supersonic has rapidly become a fixture in the diary of any West Midlands gig goer looking beyond the musically obvious, and this year’s line-up features a boldly eclectic international line-up.

Headliners are Battles, a US quartet specialising in multi-layered, dandruff dislodging near-instrumentals of sometimes terrifying intensity. Dubbed “math rock” because of their addiction to shifting time scales, they actually make music of real beauty and passion. Having played at Supersonic before, it’s a real coup to get them back to top the bill this time around.

They’ll be joined by one of the heaviest bands on the planet, the Athens, Georgia trio Harvey Milk, who’ve patently been dabbling in Motorhead and Dinosaur Jr. and British hardcore. Which, of course, is a very good thing.

Other acts confirmed for the Custard Factory based noisefest include Efterklang, Harmonia, Noxagt, Earth, Oxbow, Max Tundra, and Black Sun.

The whole shebang runs from 11-13 July, with tickets on sale next month. More info about the acts performing at http://www.capsule.org.uk/Coming_Up/209.aspx

Local heroes Einstellung (primal metal riffing meets Krautrock) are on the bill too, and with a debut album on the horizon they’ll be in the mood to celebrate at the Rainbow, Digbeth on March 7 (www.myspace.com/einstellung)

Support comes from Leicester shoegazers Kyte with Napalm Death founder Nic Bullen putting together a no doubt terrifying sound collage/DJ set.

Tickets for the Rainbow show are just £4 in advance from Swordfish Records, Temple Street.
