HONOURS EVEN AS OWEN NICKS POINT OFF BLUES

18-03-2008

Blues inched closer to Premiership safety with a 1-1 home draw against fellow strugglers Newcastle – but there’ll be disappointment at their failure to beat a team who’ve failed to win since Kevin Keegan returned in mid-January.

Toon striker Michael Owen – watched by England manager Fabio Capello – equalised for this visitors ten minutes into the second half after James McFadden had given Birmingham a 34th minute lead with a cool, opportunist finish from 8 yards.

It was McFadden’s fourth goal in six games, and at £5million the Scotland forward is turning into the buy of the season.

Overall, it was a fair outcome to a scruffy match watched by 25,777 with Blues bossing it before the interval, but then relying on keeper Maik Taylor after it.
