GAUNT BRINGS BLACK COUNTRY TO BOOK 12-11-2008 A Black Country hotel has been identified as helping put the “Great” in Britain by top radio shock Jon Gaunt in his latest book. The Coventry born Sun columnist – currently suspended after calling a local councilor a ‘Nazi’ – has given star billing to the Beacon Hotel in Sedgley, home of the famous Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild. As the title would suggest, ‘Gaunty’s Best of British,’ is a celebration of the country’s finer points – although as you’d expect, there’s also a sideswipe at benefit cheats and gun and knife crime. Gaunt also highlights the Black Country Living Museum as one of the top 10 museums and art galleries in Britain for families with young children – praising its ability for ‘bringing to life our industrial past’. Speaking before his recent on-air spat, he said: “All I want is for people to realise we should stop apologising for being British and start celebrating our culture. “In the book I have listed every single reason I can think of to be proud of this great nation. If it weren’t for Britain we wouldn’t have football, Shakespeare, the jet engine. “We also have an illustrious motoring heritage and we are such a generous nation we give more to charity than any other country in Western Europe. This is just a handful of the thousands of reasons this country is so great and I think we should stand up and be proud.” His previous book, an autobiography called Undaunted, was a best seller.
