Poet's Corner
GET DOWN AND DIRTY WITH THE ALLOTMENT CREW
09-03-2009

The Stirrer has been encouraging readers to get their hands dirty in recent weeks with Audrey Miller's "Grown Yer Own" blogs. Our poet laureate Brendan Hawthorne gets into the green spirit.
It looks like we’re to green up
To get us back
Into the black
And out of the red
With an increase in
Allotment beds
And potting sheds
There’ll be less cruising
Along supermarket aisles
Clocking up the food miles
For us to do and
More digging and
Sowing and
Sifting through
Now the drive is on
To plant our own
To get our five-a-day
The ecological way
Propagating rows
Learn how they grow
And if we can’t grow our own
Whatever the reason
We can still buy or barter
Within our town
With the green-fingered few
Of the down and dirty
Allotments crew
Get the goods barrowed
Door to door
The freshest of foods
The broadest of smiles
Delivered with pride
And if we’re made to think
About our every meal
Be committed to
The planet with economical zeal
Perhaps then we’ll waste less
From the dinner plates
Of pre-packed
Oven ready pap
And value what we eat
What we have
And what we can provide
For ourselves
Without getting taken
On a shopping trip ride
