MOAZZAM’S GITMO PLEA TO GORDON 11-01-2008
Moazzam Begg, the Birmingham man held for two years at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba before being released without charge, will be at Downing Street today calling for the closure of the US detainment camp - which is “celebrating” its sixth birthday. Begg will be handing in a letter signed by Baroness Helena Kennedy, Baroness Sarah Ludford, Lord Nazir Ahmed, Sir Geoffrey Bindman – and our own Stirrer blogger and human rights activist Dr David Nicholl. To see what they’re saying, click here. “We’re hoping to get some sort of response from Gordon Brown because there are still British residents there”, Begg told The Stirrer. “Binyam Mohammed is going through the Military Commission process, and when they said they were going to put me through that, the British government decided to intervene. “It’s not just about the British people though. They should shut the door completely on the place. “Colin Powell said that if he was in power he would close it down in an afternoon. “People say that there are still terrorists there. Well, we’ve had terrorism in Britain and the United States for three decades at least and a whole set of laws have grown up around it. “To say we don’t have adequate laws to deal with them is nonsense.” Should Guantanamo Bay be closed?
