Get Out More.................................Gig News MARTI PELLOW (Town Hall, 10/11 April 2008) 11-12-2007
Marti’s band Wet Wet Wet were originally championed by the godfather of alternative rock John Peel. Strange but true. Dunno how many Peel fans will be queuing up for these rare solo gigs, but tickets go on sale this morning at 10am. Peel’s affection for the band came about because a) they were struggling Glaswegian dole dodgers and b) because their debut single “Wishing I Was Lucky” was rather good. As if to underline their indie credentials, the band took their name from a Scritti Politti song (“Getting’ Havin Holdin”) although once they’d hit the charts they were rapidly absorbed into the mainstream and chalked up a whole succession of white soul hits like “Sweet Little Mystery” and “Goodnight Girl”. It all culminated with their cover of the Troggs “Love Is All Around” in 1994, which stayed at number one for 15 weeks until Pellow insisted it was deleted because he was bored with it. In 1999, the singer took a five year sabbatical, with the group successfully reforming in 2004. Now Pellow’s taking the chance to enjoy a couple of dates in his own name in the intimate surroundings of the Town Hall. Hot flushes and “sold out” signs guaranteed. Tickets from www.thsh.co.uk |
