SPEAKING UP FOR THE MIDLANDS 16-11-2006 Lovers of the spoken word have got three great events to look forward to over the coming days. One will kick off the weekend at Borders, the other should liven up your midweek at MAC, and there'll be chance to keep on loffing in Wolverhampton. The Borders event marks the 40th birthday of Brook Street, the sexual health advice centre, and features a trio of poets including Birmingham's poet laureate Spoz (Giovanni Esposito) a former MG Rover worker until he was made redundant. He admits to having been a Brook punter in the 80's so we look forward to more revelations on the night. Clare Hill and 14-year old Swanshurt School pupil Helen Monks complete an intriguing line up. The action starts at 5pm at Borders in the Bullring on Friday and it's free. Drinks and nibbles will be provided too, and it'll all be done by 6. Next Thursday, MAC plays host to a short story performance featuring work from the excellent Tindal Street press. The compere is Joan Michelson whomade a couple of contributions to the recent Loffing Matters collection. That starts at 7.30 and is just £4 in. And the night before the editor of Loffing Matters Paul MacDonald will be holding forth at Wolverhampton University with yet more local writers in attendance including The Stirrer's very own Laurence Inman and John Mulcreevy. Should be a good un. That's in Room MC 401 in the Millennium Building at the city campus between 5 and 6.30. Free admission |
