CHUMBAWUMBA (The Robin, Bilston, March 12)

20-02-2008

They get knocked down…but they get up again…oh Danny Boy, Danny Boy.  Yes the world’s most listenable anarcho punksters are back in the West Midlands next month, and are always worth a gander.

Why there was even a brief period in the late 90’s when they had a hit record “Tubthumping” and one of their members (Danbert Nobacon) poured a jug of water over the head of then Deputy PM John Prescott.

Musically they’ve veered from Crass-style rantings to trad folk to dance samples, so it’s anyone’s guess what they’ll do at the Robin – what you can be sure of is that it will have a sharp political edge and a sense of humour.

The band once allowed Ford Motors to use one of their songs in an ad – and promptly gave away the $100,000 fee to two groups of radical activists, Indymedia and Corpwatch.

Their new album “The Boy Bands Have Won” is out next month.

Relive that Tubthumping moment again, and remember that this was the band who took the line “pissing the night away” onto Top of The Pops and daytime Radio 1 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fm4iU0yx9GY

Or how about their song inspired by the pillage of Iraq’s museums “On Ebay”
