EUROBEAT (Birmingham Hippodrome, 9-14 June)

Euro Beat

Describing itself as "the world’s first interactive musical", this award-winning Eurovision singalong allows audience members to cast their votes for their favourite performers and will even feature a (pre-recorded) guest turn from Terry Wogan.

It’s already been named MTM Best Musical at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, and has also picked up gongs in Australia. Now it’s coming to Brum en route to the West End where it will surely become a fixture.

The idea is that everyone in the auditorium is assigned to one of ten competing countries – they’ll then have the chance to text their preferences to decide who should win on the night.

Ringleader for the night will be Les Dennis as Sergei, assisted by his glamorous assistant Boyka, who’ll be urging the contestants to do whatever’s necessary (!) to win the acclaim of the crowd.

Her theme tune, “I’m Sarajevo…Taste Me” should give you some idea of what to expect, but just in case you’re still unsure, Metro reckoned the show is, “as camp as Graham Norton listening to Bucks Fizz in a camper van”

Expect smut and innuendo galore (Boyka is a former Olympic pole-vaulting champion, fnaar fnaar) and plenty of cross-generational, gay-friendly fun.

Eurobeat is at Birmingham Hippodrome from 9-14 June, tickets from www.birminghamhippodrome.com
