BRUM BAND SCOOPS C4 BAND TITLE 24-12-2007
It was X Factor with street cred…Channel 4’s “mobileAct” competition for unsigned bands – and it’s been won by Birmingham’s Envy & Other Sins who have landed themselves a recording conract as a result. What makes their success all the more satisfying is that they were actually kicked out by the show’s judges – Radio One DJ Jo Whiley, Blur bassist Alex James and A&M head honcho Simon Gavin – but then re-instated by votes from the public. Critics seem to have a bit of troubling nailing down their sound – maybe indicating that they aren’t followers of any obvious trend. Which is A GOOD THING. One reviewer suggested they ought to be “Moll Flanders backing band”, while Sam Endicott of The Bravery reckoned they were like “Syd Barrett fronting Queen”. Mark Beaumont in the NME called them “the Devil’s Britpop.” Never mind that though – the beauty of the internet is that you can find out for yourself at the click of a mouse.
