MIRREN REIGNS SUPREME AT THE OSCARS 26-02-2007 British actress Helen Mirren has scooped the best actress Oscar for her starring role in the Queen; another veteran, Martin Scorsese has taken Best Director and Best Film Oscars for The Departed.
Neither success was unexpected; Mirren was such a firm favourite some bookies were apparently paying out before the ceremony. The Departed (an intense cop drama) saw offThe Queen for thebest movie award which also saw nominations forBabel, Little Miss Sunshine, and Clint Eastwood's Letter From Iwo Jimo. There was more success forBritish movies, with Forrest Whittakersecuring the Best Actor gong for his role as Idi Amin in The Last King Of Scotland(although Whittaker himself is a Yank).
