Exclusive GRUNDY AND BORE COME TOGETHER 16-05-2008 It’s not yet November – but fireworks are guaranteed over the coming months in Birmingham’s opposition Labour Group. Leader Sir Albert Bore will be forced to work alongside his bete noire, Cath Grundy, who’s been elected to the city’s shadow cabinet. Grundy has been allocated the Equalities and Human Resources brief, pitting her – officially at least - against Alan Rudge, the Council’s Single Status supremo. In reality, her presence will be a constant reminder to Sir Albert that there are those in the party who wish to see him removed. Although Grundy failed to topple Ian Ward in last weekend’s deputy leadership elections, she secured 10 votes – an unexpectedly high figure – and said this “set down a marker” for Bore’s job (see link here). Sir Albert did at least manage to see off an attempt by another adversary - Kingstanding councillor Peter Kane – to win a seat in the shadow cabinet There’s also been an interesting change in Labour’s representative on the West Midlands Police Authority. Yvonne Mosquito – the authority’s deputy chair – has been dumped in favour of Mohammed Afzal. Mosquito had done nothing wrong, but observers feel that with the selection of the Labour parliamentary candidate in Ladywood due next month – a role she aspires to – she may have been outmanoeuvred at just the wrong time.
