HUNTING FOR BUNTING AS ELECTION LOOMS 26-04-2008 Should there be posters and bunting to mark the local elections? We think so, but the Deputy Leader of Birmingham Council reckons it would be wrong for politicos to deface lamp posts when other organisation are banned from fly posting. This week, The Stirrer’s regular Thursday Birmingham Mail column included a plea for the return of candidates posters on our streets after they were banned a couple of years ago (http://tinyurl.com/5aonzw). In other parts of the West Midlands including Sandwell, the tradition continues, and even if it doesn’t help voter turn out, it signifies that an event of some importance is taking place. Birmingham’s deputy leader disagrees. He called after reading the article to say: “We can’t do it. It would be sheer hypocrisy on our part to take people top court for fly-posting then do the same thing ourselves. "Last year was the first when we didn't have the posters and the turnout was just the same." Should we have a return to the traditional party posters on the streets?
