JOE JACKSON (Wolves Civic, June 16, 2008)

19-03-2008

Joe Jackson

Long time no see. One of the UK’s most versatile musicians, now exiled to the States, makes a long overdue return to the gigging scene.

It’s ages since Jackson had a hit, or even an album worth talking about, but his back catalogue is certainly worth making a song and dance about.

He broke through in the early '80s as an angst-ridden Elvis Costello-style loser in love, and created two self-mocking classics – “Is She Really Going Out With Him” and “Different For Girls”.

That was followed by a dramatic shift to swing jazz which was as surprising as it was successful – witness “Steppin’ Out”.

Apart from an appearance on Jools Holland several months back, it’s been a quiet few years for Joe, but this should be worth a look.
