RUPERT THE BARE - WHAT THE WORLD CUP TELLS US ABOUT THE PREMIERSHIP

15-07-2006

Rupert Murdoch has arguably delivered the most formidable piece of media brainwashing ever seen in this country.

Anyone who witnessed the gigantic yawn that was England's World Cup adventure, will have surely realised the Premiership is a victory for style over substance.

Coming on the back of a dismal season watching Second City football, the World Cup confirmed my worst fears.

The media behemoth known as News Corporation pumps out so much Premiership propaganda on a daily basis that is has seeped into the public psyche.

Strip away the bluster of Sky television and Murdoch's heavy-selling newspapers and there is a distinct lack of entertainment.

This man wants you to buy his satellite dishes and newspapers so, they repeatedly tell you the “Premiership is the best league in the world.”

Really? Is this product any more entertaining than in the early eighties when media hype was miniscule by comparison?

Of course it's not and all the self-serving pundits who tell us otherwise are talking out of their well-paid backsides.

England's golden generation, as lazy reporters so laughably descried them, proved to be anything other than a well-organised side with a good defence.

The myth continues apace though, as the English language become ever more dominant globally, so the sales of satellite dishes increase.

Legions of brainwashed supporters in downtown Tokyo will be sipping their Japanese lager and watching Sheffield United v Watford desperately trying to enjoy themselves.

For sure, there are still great games but ditch the hype and the self-opinionated pundits who specialise in stating the obvious and watch with your eyes.

Turn off Channel 408 and buy your local newspaper instead so you don't read about the latest ‘crisis' enveloping one of the top four clubs in the country on a daily basis.

Only then will you be able to take a rational view and with subscriptions increasing my friendly Sky service centre will receive a Dear John phone call very soon.

As John Lydon once famously said at a Sex Pistols gig- “Ever get the feeling you've been cheated.”
