KHAN: LABOUR "CLUTCHING AT STRAWS" OVER POSTAL VOTING

17-04-2008

Liberal Democrat councillor Ayoub Khan has hit back at Labour calls for a police probe into postal voting in Aston. He accuses his rivals of "clutching at straws" and trying to smear him.

The Stirrer reported that Khan had turned up at Birmingham's election office yesterday clutching 200 postal voting applications and 150 voter registration forms.

Birmingham's Labour leader Sir Albert Bore said that in light of previous problems with postal voting the ward, there should be an investigation (see link here).

Bore reported suspicions of fraud in 2006 which led to a prosecution.

Khan, though, insists he is doing nothing wrong, and believes he's the victim of dirty tricks.

"There must be a mole in the Elections Office working for the Labour party" he said.

"Maybe Albert Bore should have been more concerned when members of his own party submitted thousands of false voting forms.

"They should stop clutching at straws. Labour are obviously getting frustrated on the ground. They know they've lost Aston, and are just trying to capture headlines to tarnish my reputation.

When asked why he had turned up with so many forms at one time, Khan explained that there was a backlog because he had been ill with flu for two weeks.

And he insisted: "As long as they are genuine forms - and they are genuine forms - I've done nothing wrong. If I wanted to sneaky or sly, I wouldn't have turned up with so many like that, would I?"
