MICK HUCKNALL’S TRIBUTE TO BOBBY BLAND (Wolvo Civic Hall)

29-02-2008

Mick Hucknall

Tickets went on sale this morning for Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall’s tribute show to blues and soul legend Bobby Bland.

Hucknall’s recent work has undoubtedly veered towards MOR, but there’s no questioning his love of great black music – nor his ability to deliver the soaring and whooping vocals the genre demands.

He’s covered plenty of great soul tunes before – “Money’s Too Tight To Mention” by Eddie Harris was a breakthrough tune for his band – and Bland is a under-rated, gravelly voiced great of the '50s '60s and '70s.

The Stirrer’s fave track is a lovelorn blues number “Dear Bobby (The Note)” in which his missus leaves him a letter explaining why she’s buggered off with another bloke – she loves our Bob, but this other chap has “got so much Soul,” apparently. I think we know what you mean, love.

“Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City” is another classic

Hucknall will be releasing an album of Bland songs (as opposed to the usual album of bland songs) and you can catch the live show at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on June 30.
