Get Out More................................Film News MIDLAND JOURNEY TO WOLVERHAMPTON (The Lighthouse) 29-03-2008 The successful Midland Journey archive film series has some more gems from Wolverhampton and the Black Country coming up – including a Peas-Pudding Night in Bradley, decorating ponies for May Day in Upper Gornal and a Royal visit at the Molineux. There’ll be eight short films in total in this latest selection of gems culled from the ATV archive and curated by the Media Archive For Central England. The Black Country (1969) is a documentary about the region and includes chain making at Cradley Heath, a traditional peas-pudding night and singalong at a pub in Bradley, and 90-year-old Hannah Baker from Tipton who reminisces about the old days. Two films mark royal visits to the city; Silver Jubilee Celebrations in Wolverhampton (1935, silent) shows the events at The Molineux that marked the silver jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in 1935, and A Day To Remember (1962) shows The Queen’s visit to Wolverhampton in 1962. A different side of the Molineux is shown in Wolves Training Methods (1966) where we see the team testing out an unusual training method a few days after the arrival of new manager Ronnie Allen in 1966, and The Wolves Fox (1981) where ATV reporter John Swallow reports on a fox that has dug up the pitch! More reminiscences of Black Country life can be seen in Baggeridge Colliery (1968) and May Day Ponies (1974) highlighting goings on at the last operational pit in the Midlands, whilst Emily Hadley (1970) shows Tipton resident Emily Hadley shunning an automatic washing machine for her traditional dolly tub and mangle. The shows are on Wednesday 2 April at 7pm & Wednesday 9 April at 2.15pm at the Light House. Tickets cost £3 for matinee screening & £5.20 / £3.90 concessions for evening screening.
