MINISTER’S INVITE TO STIRRER READERS 21-11-2008
West Midlands Minister Ian Austin has issued a personal invitation to Stirrer readers to attend a lecture next week in honour of Frank Foley – the British spy who helped Jews escape from Nazi Germany. Foley was honoured in a ceremony yesterday at the Foreign Office. Austin is helping launch the Annual Frank Foley Memorial Lecture which will be delivered on Friday, November 28 at Stourbridge College by investigative journalist Michael Smith who writes for the Sunday Times. Smith wrote “Foley: The Spy Who Saved 10,000 Jews”, telling the tale of the Berlin-based MI6 agent who later retired to the West Midlands until his death 50 years ago. “I know that a lot of Stirrer readers have been moved by his story” Austin said. “I’d like to see as many of them as possible turn out next week. “It’s going to be a really good evening and it will show that Frank Foley, and what he represents, hasn’t been forgotten.” As we reported last week, there is now an online campaign for Foley to receive a posthumous honour (see link here). A plaque was unveiled at the Foreign Commonwealth Office yesterday, in recognition of his role (and that of another British official Robert Smallbones) in helping Jews leave Germany for Britain, Palestine, and the Empire. The Annual Frank Foley Memorial Lecture is at Stourbridge College, next Friday November 28, at 7pm. For tickets email AUSTINI@parliament.uk or just turn up on the night. |
