Audrey's Grow Yer Own Blog NOW IS THE TIME 20-05-2009 With a Bank Holiday weekend approaching, now is the time to get out there and start planting your seed reckons Audrey Miller. Whilst we all await those 'first green shoots' to beat the recession mid-May is good time to take action and grow your own food. It's the time generally agreed to be the end of any danger from overnight frost, and so considered safe to begin planting out the tomatoes beans and other delicate frost sensitive plants. Which means this weekend is planting time for all. Those in or out of work can enjoy the pleasure of longer daylight and the joy of gardening. The satisfaction of seeing food production on home territory is not to be under estimated. There is something for all the senses to enjoy, not to mention all the"green " benefit, such as the reduction in food miles and carbon footprint etc. I don't actually talk to my plants but I do give them tender loving care on a daily basis. and the rewards have been really good I have enjoyed home grown asparagus and strawberries already this month and there are more good things to follow. But I must not get carried away with the joy of home grown food, I have to remember that I am blogging with the serious purpose of persuading more and more people to grow their own. All effective campaign need one famous supporter or celeb, and it would seem that mention of the Obarma White House vegetable garden is having an effect. The fact that part of the White House lawn has been given over to organic fruit and veg is making waves globally. I wonder if it might be the reason why so many of my local shops had sold out of seeds before the end of April and the BBC Gardeners World is giving seeds away to promote its UK wide "Dig Your Own Grub "campaign. Global and national promotion must be followed through in the Black Country and Birmingham that why I was specially pleased to hear that our own Adrian Goldberg will also be growing his own outdoor tomatoes his back garden. The challenge now is to extend his crop range to peppers, chillies, courgettes, and other goodies that can all be easily grown in grow bags or pots even if you do not have an allotment or traditional vegetable plot. Now it's over to you to Stirrer. Come on, get out more and into your garden. DISCUSS THIS ON THE STIRRER FORUM |
