OLDBURY GETS THE WIND UP

17-01-2008

Wind Turbines

Sandwell Council has launched its first experiment in wind power by installing a turbine in Oldbury.

The small-scale £5,000 generator was installed yesterday off Taylors Lane in Oldbury, close to the tip in Shidas Lane. There’ll be another sited elsewhere in the Black Country borough later this year.

It’s part an experiment to assess the practicality of generating renewable energy in urban areas.

Roy McCauley, the Council’s sustainable development policy officer estimated that the turbine could take half a tonne of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere each year.

After a 12 month trial the Council will decide whether to progress with the project.
