CALL FOR BAN AS B&Q GOES COLD ON PATIO HEATERS 22-01-2008 Britain’s biggest outlet for patio heaters B&Q has warmed up the debate on global warming – by withdrawing them from sale. Now West Midlands Friends of the Earth wants the offending items banned altogether. B&Q, which has long promoted its green credentials, reckons this an important step towards reducing carbon emissions. There are more than 1 million garden heaters in circulation, and it’s estimated that in just one hour they generate as much Co2 as making 400 cups of tea. Wyevale and Nottcutts have both already stopped selling them. With the ownership of heaters forecast to virtually double this year, there’s an element of financial self-sacrifice by B&Q (not to mention some friendly PR), and now West Midlands FoE wants patio heaters outlawed altogether. “These carbon- belching monstrosities waste energy and cause needless damage to our environment” commented spokesman Chris Crean. “We are delighted that B&Q has decided to stop selling these products. But the Government must now act and ban patio heaters. It’s time to get tough on tackling climate change.” Should patio heaters be banned? Leave a comment on our Message Board. |
