Yet these were needed in 2009...

"needed" ?

Read carefully, the paths are still choppy with large chunks of ice floating around, hence the breakers.

Yes needed as the conditions were too dangerous without them as your sentence proves. If you feel you need to argue against yourself then go ahead...

You simply cannot accept that ice passages are melting can you?

Oh well, bigoted denial in the face of evidence, another day in the life of LIKW.

"Scientists estimate that the last time that the North East Passage was
as ice free as it is now was between 5,000 and 7,000 years ago"

Global Warming ?

That is a 2000 years period so should we not call it the "The Ice Free AGE"

Ever heard of Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld? He chronicled his journey through the North-East passage between 1878 and 1880. And he didn't need any Russian nuclear powered icebreakers either.

This is even worse than LIKW suggested, the northeast passage was used throughout the 20th century by the Soviet union. they had ports on the way and everything,
this post seems to collate a lot of the debunking.

http://eureferendum.blogspot.com/2009/0 ... story.html

The german ship 'Komet' used it in 1940 to surprise allied shipping in the pacific (sunk five ships)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_aux ... iser_Komet

An embarrasingly bad fail from our media.

Sorry to rain on yours and LIKW's parades but "NASA Aqua satellite revealed that the last ice blockage of the Northern Sea Route in the Laptev Sea had melted by late August 2008, the first time in 125,000 years that both the Northwest Passage and Northern Sea Route had been open simultaneously."

Nice try though.

Wow, some of those satellite records go back a long way.

I thought the 125,000 quote is from the Independant. They are using the last age when the poles were ice free (not the same thing as passable) whereas the NSDIC who they selectively quoted from also reckon 5,500 years ago is possible .
Have i got this wrong :?:

Anyway this story is about the claim that ships being able to sail through the route is a new thing not previously possible. Regardless of opinion on climate change this is patent bollocks and problematic that so much of our media is willing to publicise such a claim .

If true; benefits? More coffins for the coffin making industry and its heritage? Hence more money for the restoration thereof?

Afraid not, cold weather is much effective at producing bodies to bury.

Yet Arctic ice coverage was rebounding from the low set the previous year (on a satellite record going back to 1979). And the Arctic ice has started growing again after this summer's melt season. The graph below shows how the Arctic ice coverage is recovering.

I was thinking more along the lines of over-hyped disaster movies; re rising oceans, more tsunamis, freak localised weather patterns creating deadly eddy currents. You could of course add in the decreasing cold weather factor for a net value veering towards the Bermuda shorts wearing coffin builders...but I ain't gonna diss the reality, whatever that is crzayface

Nice try again but as you can sea the picture is far bigger than you selectively paint it

PMSL... Your graphs stop in 2007. My graph is dated to 15th September 2009. The ice coverage is increasing since 2007 but that's too inconvenient for you.

If you look ever-so carefully LIKW you will see how these tiny increases you applaud in your chosen date-set do not effect the overall trend.

Perhaps it was too subtle for you?

Your data stops in 2007. The trend is flawed but you're too stupid to understand that.
